Artist Statement 1
Over the time at Ringling, I have got my hands in as many different things possible. I have a passion for all forms of art and express myself by working with a variety of materials including myself. I try to present my self in a way different from others, but true to my inner self. I don't want limit myself in any ways by all means. I like my work to speak in it's own way, so the viewer has to use their imagination!
Artist Statement 2
I have come up with 12 icons, consisted of different animals to represent a recognized group in the culture of gay males. The animal's are separated though the center, sectioned off by a universal puzzle piece. The "Top", or head portion of the animal consist the outer connection of the puzzle. The "Bottom" or ass end of the icon withholds the internal component between the penetration of icons. Color also plays a dominate factor in the divulgence in my work. The selected colors associated with icons is another way to broaden the communication and forms of signaling sexual preferences and interest.
Growing up in a small country town in the middle of North Carolina, a large portion of the population consist of reactionary ignorance. My progression towards an acute consciousness arose of my homosexuality at a young age growing up. Having a such small understanding of the feelings emerging, and connections relating created a growth within my sensibility of alertness. With that a sense of direction toward an obligation to rely on the concealing a bit of my identity. The process of converting into the Artist I am today has lead me to be more erudite. Discovering it necessary too reveal my homosexual tendencies, at the same time keeping alert of the appropriate times to conceal. The revealing and concealing aspects play a great deal in ones decision making on a daily basis. This brings awareness to me that all homosexuals deal with the concealing and revealing of their identity subtly in all their actions, even the most flamboyant. Working off this concept has brought to my attention more things than I found imaginable in the gay society, and it's historical context. In relation to the information now imbedded have lead me to base my work on a large amount of explicit information about an individual.
